Wintergreen is a small shrub less than 15 cm tall of the Ericaceae family and the Gaultheria genus which grows in the forests of North America, Canada and China.
Its white to pale pink summer flowers located at the base of the leaves are generally solitary in the shape of small bells. They produce scarlet red berries from October to March.
Wintergreen essential oil is extracted from its leaves.

It thus causes an immediate subcutaneous vasoconstriction at the origin of its refreshing effect. Mint is used externally to relieve joint and inflammatory pain. Rarely used pure, except for one to two drops for certain neuralgias, it often makes up multiple painkilling formulations for topical use.
